Innovation Network

The Innovation Capability Pathway

Aware, Align, Apply, Deliver, Sustain.

One connected system that develops innovation ambassadors, practitioners, facilitators and leaders through live challenges, with recognition earned by evidence of application rather than attendance.

Design principles

How the pathway is built

The pathway draws on the design of enterprise capability programmes we have delivered for large organisations, without reproducing any client’s materials. These are the principles underneath it.

The methods themselves, Design Thinking, Lean, Design Sprint, Agile and Continuous Improvement, are drawn together in the Innovation Capability System. The pathway is the learner’s route through it.

Five stages

Select a stage to see who it is for and what it produces

Stage 2 · Align

Frame the right challenge

Build the foundation: understand users, frame the challenge properly, generate options, prototype and test the assumptions that matter.

Who it is for

  • Innovation Ambassadors
  • Practitioners
  • Unit teams
  • Internal facilitators

Progression

Apply the process to a workplace challenge to earn Certified Innovation Associate.

The Capability Portfolio

Evidence that learning has moved into work.

Progression is based on evidence, application and reflection rather than attendance alone. Six steps, from profile to progress.

  1. 01

    Profile

A diagnostic and learner profile establish where each person starts, which role they hold and what they need to be able to do.

  2. 02

    Prepare

Before a programme, participants identify the live challenge they will work on and the stakeholders around it. Sponsors confirm it matters.

  3. 03

    Apply

During and after the programme, the methods are used on the challenge. The work is real, and so is the risk of learning that an assumption was wrong.

  4. 04

    Evidence

Work products are recorded: the framed challenge, the map, the prototype, the experiment result, the backlog, the roadmap, the facilitation design.

  5. 05

    Reflect

A short reflective review records what was learned, what would be done differently and what decision the evidence supports.

  6. 06

    Progress

An assessor reviews the evidence. Recognition is awarded, the next stage is recommended and sponsors see what has been applied.

Courses create knowledge. Applied evidence creates capability.

Examples of evidence participants produce

  • Challenge statements
  • Stakeholder maps
  • Assumption maps
  • Prototypes
  • Experiments
  • Test results
  • Backlogs
  • System maps
  • Improvement plans
  • Delivery roadmaps
  • Adoption plans
  • Facilitation designs
  • Strategic challenge portfolios
  • Benefits and outcome reports

Colours indicate the stage at which each work product is usually produced.

For individual learners

Questions people ask before they start

Where should I start?

With the Digital Introduction. It takes under an hour, gives you a diagnostic and a learner profile, and recommends your starting point. Senior sponsors can go straight from there to Strategic Innovation Leadership; most other roles continue to Innovation Processes.

What will I learn to do?

Depending on your route: frame a challenge with evidence, research users and stakeholders, generate and prioritise options, prototype and test assumptions, validate a solution, build a backlog or a delivery roadmap, improve a process, facilitate a workshop or sprint, or govern a portfolio of challenges.

What practical evidence must I produce?

Real work products from a live challenge, recorded in your Capability Portfolio. For Innovation Processes that means a framed challenge, an experiment run in the workplace and its result. For Innovation Practitioner it means a substantial workplace project. For Master Facilitator it means an intervention you designed and facilitated, observed by an assessor.

What recognition can I earn?

Certified Innovation Associate after Innovation Processes and its workplace application. Certified Innovation Professional after the Innovation Practitioner project. Certified Workshop Facilitator and Master Facilitator through the facilitator route. Certified Innovation Leader after the strategic capstone. Each is awarded on assessed evidence, not attendance.

What is the next step in my development?

Your Capability Portfolio records a recommended next stage after each assessment. Practitioners typically add a specialist Deliver module; experienced practitioners progress to Master Facilitator; core teams complete the full pathway through to Strategic Innovation Leadership.

Questions sponsors ask before they commit

How do we build capability across different roles?

The Innovation Capability Pathway has one common foundation and role-based routes through five stages. Ambassadors complete the foundation. Practitioners continue to a live-challenge programme and specialist modules. Facilitators go on to Master Facilitator. Leaders take the Digital Introduction and Strategic Innovation Leadership. Everyone shares the same vocabulary; nobody sits through a module designed for another role.

How can we prove the learning is being applied?

Every participant works on a live challenge and records work products in a Capability Portfolio: framed challenges, prototypes, experiment results, backlogs, roadmaps, facilitation designs. Certification is awarded only after workplace application has been assessed. Sponsors receive cohort and academy reports showing what was produced, decided and changed.

Can the pathway be tailored to our organisation?

Yes. A facilitated cohort adapts the sequence, challenge selection and materials. An enterprise academy goes further, building your roles, language, governance and challenge portfolio into a branded programme delivered with your own accredited facilitators.

How does this support AI adoption and transformation?

AI is embedded at every stage of the pathway, from research synthesis and ideation to backlog development and portfolio scenarios, with human ownership of decisions, source checking and information-handling rules built in. Alongside the pathway, AI Productivity Sprints and the AI Champions Programme redesign real workflows and measure the gains.

How do we develop internal facilitators?

The Master Facilitator programme develops internal facilitators through practice and an assessed capstone: three days of designing and running real workshop segments with feedback, then a complete intervention facilitated for a real team and observed by an assessor. Certified Workshop Facilitator is awarded at the applied stage and Master Facilitator after the advanced capstone.

What evidence will senior sponsors receive?

At programme level, a summary of challenges worked on, work products produced and recognition earned. For cohorts and academies, progress reports at each stage and a dashboard covering participation, certification, challenge outcomes and benefits.
